What's it like to be a Practice Leader?
Practice Leaders play a key role in ensuring workers are well equipped to deliver the best service to their clients, through coaching, guidance and mentoring. They typically work in healthcare settings, including organisations that provide services related to mental health, aged care and disability, child welfare and family services. As a result, Practice Leaders need to understand the different challenges that clients face, so they can provide the appropriate support workers to meet these needs.
Tasks and duties
- Managing and co-ordinating processes and work schedules.
- Ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
- Mentoring support workers to deliver high quality service and achieve client and organisational objectives.
- Coaching and motivating team members and assisting with performance appraisals.

You don’t need a qualification to become a Practice Leader, but many employers prefer candidates with a relevant tertiary qualification and industry experience. Checks and vaccinations may be required for some roles.
- 1.Complete a relevant VET qualification. This could be a Certificate III in Community Services (CHC32015), Diploma of Community Services (CHC52015) or Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) (CHC33015).
- 2.Alternatively, a relevant bachelor degree can open a broader range of career options. This could be a Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Social Science.
- 3.Complete any checks as required by an employer, such as a Working with Children Check and Police Check.
- 4.Gain experience working as a Community Support Worker.
